McKinleyville Teen Center

The CLUB @ McKinleyville Teen & Community Center is now open and running their after-school programs for Middle and High Schoolers aged 11 to 18.  Although the real cost to cover these programs is $504 per child per year, we have been able to have the school year Membership fee be $30.00 per child.  Individual and corporate contributions make up the rest of the cost.  

Every day members are helped with their homework, participate in organized sports, arts & crafts projects, and enjoy a nutritious snack. The Club focuses on three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Focusing on these outcomes provides the children who participate the opportunity to engage in programs that will enable them to develop positive self images and reach their full potential.

 

Examples of programs within our three priorities are:

Diploma2Degree is a college prep program for 9th to 12th graders. It features tutoring, academic counseling, career development and college research. This program meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00-6:30pm.  

Keystone is a program that focuses on leadership and character development, community volunteering, fundraising and features an end of the year trip. Keystone meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00pm.

Smart Moves is a seminar style program that focuses on physical, emotional and social development while allowing the members to express themselves openly in a positive environment. This program is for 12-14 year olds on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 4:30pm.

Power Snack happens Monday-Thursday and is a 30 minute block of time set aside for Homework/Reading/Quiet Play and a nutritious snack.

How did this all come to be?

In 2010, MCSD staff began meeting with youth at the middle school and high school in an effort to improve the leisure and recreation opportunities we offered to the group.  Throughout these meetings it was clearly identified that teens felt there was no central location for teens to meet during the hours outside of school.  A teen center was identified as a solution to this problem.

In 2011 MCSD consulted with an outside firm to conduct a community survey to see if property owners would support a measure to help fund maintenance of our parks and facilities as well as constructing a new facility.  Maintaining what MCSD already owned had a very high response.  Building a teen & community center was also a high priority as a building project according to the results of the survey.  Staff and community members began to talk to the community about initiating a process to pass a measure to help provide funding for these items.

Property owners approved Measure B in 2012, which provided funding to McKinleyville Parks & Recreation to build a teen & community centeras well as funding to help maintain our parks and facilities.  MCSD staff began meeting with community stakeholders as well as area youth to work on the design of the new facility.  Architecture firm LDA Partners was chosen to work on the design.  Over the next couple years, staff held various community meetings to gather input on the design of the teen & community center.

Staff also formed a group of teens to help work on the design.  Teens were instrumental in the outcome of the design.  During the process MCSD started meeting with the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods (BGCR).  Together, a grant in the amount of $64,000 was secured from the S.H. Cowell Foundation.  These funds were used to hire the Youth Leadership Institute to bring area youth together for a series of leadership workshops.  This led up to a four (4) day Youth Leadership Institute involving twelve (12) local youth.  The outcome of this process was a group of teens calling themselves the “McKinleyville Youth Leadership Society” (MYLS).

Staff and the BGCR continue to meet on a weekly basis with the goal being the a BGCR teen center once the facility is built.  Currently, staff and the BGCR are working on developing a Memorandum of Understanding as well as a business plan for the operation of the teen center.

The design was completed and the bid opening for construction was held in November 2014.  Three (3) bids were received and the lowest bid in the amount of $2,114,600 was found to be responsive.  The low bid amount exceeded the estimated budget from the Architect firm.  At its January 7, 2015 Board meeting, the MCSD Board of Directors will listen to options presented by staff and direct staff how to proceed.
